Atlantic City, NJ - April 4, 2013, with almost 200 attendees, the 2013 NJ-NENA Conference and Trade Show was a success. There was plenty of positive feedback for the pre-conference workshop, "Handling Active Shooter Calls". Many thanks to APC for that great session.

Keynote speaker, Edward Dickson spoke about the challenges 2012 brought to the state of New Jersey. Speakers from Ocean and Monmouth Counties helped us understand their challenges and lessons learned from Superstorm Sandy. Craig Reiner from OETS gave us the state's perspective on the handling of the storm and Joe Toth of Verizon told us of his companies efforts to keep the lines of communications open. There were numerous other important and informative sessions over the 2 day conference.

2013 Keynote Speaker - Edward Dickson

Director, New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness

Edward Dickson was appointed in February 2012 by Governor Chris Christie to serve as the Director of the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (OHSP). Director Dickson's responsibilities include oversight for the State of New Jersey's counterterrorism and intelligence sharing efforts, its Emergency Preparedness and Response activities, and the protection of New Jersey's critical infrastructure and sensitive assets.

Prior to joining OHSP, Director Dickson served more than 3 years in the private sector as Director of Investigation with the New York based Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) within its Internal Security Department (ISD). In this role Director Dickson was responsible for the conduct of corporate investigations, its new employee background verification program, credentialing, technical security support, intelligence efforts, and ISD's compliance, audit, and risk requirements.

Director Dickson's prior law enforcement career highlights include more than 25 years of service with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) where he held many investigative and executive management assignments. Specifically regarding the Garden State, Director Dickson served from 2001 through 2004 as the FBI's Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Newark Division's National Security Branch immediately following the attacks of September 11, 2001. As such, he directly oversaw the investigative efforts surrounding several major investigations including the Daniel Pearl investigation and Anthrax attacks, as well as other significant domestic terrorism and counterintelligence initiatives. As an Inspector within the FBI's Inspection Division, he possesses significant experience in the audit, compliance, and risk management domain. Additionally, Director Dickson was the Senior Executive over the FBI's National Joint Terrorism Task Force (NJTTF), its Domestic Terrorism program, and the Counterterrorism Division's Operational Support services to various Department of Defense (DoD) initiatives and working groups.

Director Dickson has been recognized with numerous awards and commendations from various law enforcement entities and the Department of Justice for his achievements and leadership regarding numerous investigative matters, initiatives, and joint task force operations. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Director Dickson holds a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Political Science from Illinois Benedictine College, in Lisle, Illinois.
